7 Day Summer Road Trip Itinerary for Iceland - Explore Breathtaking Landscapes
Are you planning a 7-day summer road trip in Iceland? Look no further! Plus, we'll share some valuable tips and insights based on our own 7-day adventure in June 2023. Day 1
On Day 1 of your Icelandic adventure, you'll arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) and pick up your camper van (we booked through Campervan Iceland), the perfect mode of transportation for an immersive and flexible experience. From there, make your way to the vibrant capital city of Reykjavik.
We went straight to the Downtown area to eat a hot meal since the last meal we ate was over 24 hours ago. We ate at Street food station, which had surprisingly good food with reasonable prices. The area also offers a wide selection of restaurants to suit any taste. Don't forget to stock up on groceries at either Bonus or Kronan for the days ahead.
Take some time to visit the iconic Rainbow Street and Hallgrímskirkja church, marveling at its impressive architecture, resembling basalt columns you'll see throughout your trip. Check into the Reykjavik campsite and taking a well-deserved nap. We were exhausted, having not catch any Z's during our flight.
In the evening, immerse yourself in relaxation at Sky Lagoon, where you can enjoy nice showers to clean off the filth from your long journey to Iceland. We booked the 7-step ritual, which includes the sauna, body scrub, cool mist shower, and steam room. The regular admission will still grant you access to the cold plunge though.
Conclude the night by exploring the bustling Centre Reykjavik, known for its abundance of bars and late night dining options. Don't bother going anywhere else to eat if it's after 10pm. Most restaurants will only have drinks available as the kitchen is closed. We made this mistake.
We ended up eating lamb wraps at Mandi Ingólfstorg before heading back to the campsite to end the day.
Day 2
On Day 2, embark on the renowned Golden Circle route, which showcases some of Iceland's most iconic natural wonders. Begin your journey with a visit to Thingvellir National Park, where you can witness the unique geological features and historical significance of the area. Marvel at the rift valley, where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates meet.
Next, head to Geysir, home to the famous Strokkur geyser that erupts spectacularly every few minutes. Be sure to have your camera ready to capture this natural phenomenon. Continue your exploration to Kerid Crater, a volcanic crater filled with a stunning turquoise lake. You'll have to pay a fee per person since this is on private property.
Afterward, take a break in the town of Selfoss to refuel and enjoy a delicious meal. Once again, we ended up eating lamb wraps again (at Kapo Kebab) since most restaurants were closed. While yesterday's was good, this one was even better!
As you make your way to the charming village of Vik, make a stop at Urriðafoss, a beautiful waterfall accessible by a short walk. Settle in for the night at Camping Vik (Vík tjaldsvæði), where you can relax and prepare for the adventures ahead.
Day 3
Day 3 takes you further east as you continue your road trip adventure in Iceland. But before you go, you have to drive up the hill from Camping Vik to Vík i Myrdal Church. The views up there are unbelievable as you can see the whole town of Vik all the way to the ocean. You'll also find a cemetery further up the hill, with tombstones dating back to the 1800s.
Along the way, you'll encounter breathtaking viewpoints and captivating hiking opportunities. Take your time to appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds you. Make stops at various viewpoints, including Foss á Síðu, where you can admire the tall waterfall that flows in the backdrop of a small village.
Arrive at Skaftafell, a nature preserve within Vatnajökull National Park, and embark on the S2 trail to witness the magnificent Svartifoss waterfall. The unique basalt column formations surrounding the waterfall create a mesmerizing sight. Enjoy a picnic lunch in the parking area before continuing east.
After a 40 minute drive, you'll be at Diamond Beach. Marvel at the juxtaposition of black volcanic sands and glistening icebergs that wash ashore, creating a truly enchanting scene. Maybe even propose to that special someone with a diamond of your own! Or use one of the little icebergs on shore.
As the day comes to a close, be sure to catch the mesmerizing sunset at Glacier Lagoon, where floating icebergs drift in a glacial lake. Lots of photo opportunities here. We saw a handful of models wearing dresses doing photoshoots - one of them being Elsa. Not sure how they weren't frozen. Be sure to dress warm!
From there, start your journey back west towards Vik, and settle in for the night at the scenic campsite of Þakgil (Thakgil), surrounded by stunning landscapes and hiking opportunities. The drive here is extremely bumpy and feels like you're off-roading. But rest assured, this is not an F-road. We saw Tesla Model 3's here.
Day 4
You wake up in a canyon. Day 4 begins with exploration near Þakgil. Take advantage of the hiking trails and discover the nature surrounding the campsite. There are cute houses, streams, caves, and waterfalls. One waterfall is a short walk from the campsite, providing a peaceful place to enjoy your breakfast or lunch. When you're ready, traverse the bumpy roads back towards Vik to gather groceries, supplies, and refuel in preparation for your journey.
For a unique experience, consider going horseback riding along the picturesque Black Sand Beach, where you can admire the powerful waves crashing against the shore while riding these magnificent creatures.
As you begin your journey back west, make sure to make a stop at the majestic Skógafoss waterfall, where you can witness the sheer power of one of the biggest waterfalls in Iceland. This one should not be missed!
As the day comes to an end, head towards Mosfellsbær, a town near Reykjavik, where you can relax and spend the night at a campsite surrounded by tall trees, recharging for the remaining days of your Icelandic road trip.
Day 5
Day 5 marks the continuation of your adventure as you drive north, making your way to the captivating Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This region is renowned for its diverse landscapes and awe-inspiring sights. Also known as "Iceland in Miniature", you'll be able to experience everything Iceland has to offer in this little strip of land.
We embarked on the Viking Sushi Adventure Voyage with Seatours, a unique experience that allows you to savor an abundance of fresh seafood while cruising along the coast. You'll also learn about the birds, smaller islands, and some Icelandic history on this boat tour.
Continue your journey west, making stops at various view points, including the iconic Kirkjufell mountain and its accompanying waterfall, Kirkjufellsfoss. You will have to pay for parking here. This mountain has appeared in movies and TV shows, such as Game of Throne's "Arrow Mountain". This was one of our top viewpoints!
Immerse yourself in the picturesque charm of Ólafsvík and visit the enchanting Bæjarfoss waterfall. Capture the beauty of Svöðufoss and take in the serene surroundings. As the day draws to a close, indulge in the vibrant murals and art scene of Hellissandur before settling in for the night at Hellissandur Camping.
Day 6
On Day 6, continue your clockwise exploration around the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, uncovering its hidden gems and natural wonders. Make stops at Skarðsvík Beach, known for its contrast between the yellow sand and black lava rocks, offering a picturesque coastal setting.
The visit to Öndverðarnesviti Lighthouse provides a nice walk, but Svörtuloft Lighthouse just a bit south has way better views, perched on dramatic cliffs, providing breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and the vast ocean.
Take a short walk up the well maintained stairway at the Saxhóll Crater and feel the ancient energy that emanates from this volcanic feature. Continue your journey to Djúpalónssandur, a black pebble beach known for its haunting beauty and the remnants of a shipwreck. If time allows, embark on some hiking trails that begin at Djúpalónssandur, allowing you to immerse yourself further in the natural wonders of the area.
Don't miss the stops at Arnarstapi, a charming fishing village with incredible coastal formations and fascinating folklore. Capture a memorable photo of the iconic black church at Búðir before concluding the day's adventures near Eldborg Crater, where you can hike to the summit and witness the panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Rest for the night at Snorrastadir Farm Holidays, embracing the tranquility of the countryside.
Day 7
On your final day, it's time to wind down your epic Icelandic road trip and head back to Reykjavik. As you make your way back, take the opportunity to savor some of the delectable local cuisine that appeals to you. One highly recommended dining option is Matur og Drykkur, a Michelin-guided restaurant known for its innovative and flavorful dishes.
After indulging in your last meal in Iceland, treat yourself to a relaxing visit to the world-famous Blue Lagoon. Immerse yourself in the geothermal waters and let the soothing minerals rejuvenate your body and mind. To ensure a smooth departure the following day, drive south to Campsite Grandvik, where you can spend the night. Its convenient location will make it easy for you to reach Keflavik International Airport (KEF) in the morning, allowing you to bid farewell to the enchanting landscapes and unforgettable experiences of Iceland.
