Reykjavik Campsite: Camping in Iceland's Largest City
The Reykjavik Campsite makes camping in Iceland's capital city an accessible and affordable option. Located less than 10 minutes by car or a 30 minute walk from downtown Reykjavik, it provides easy access to all the attractions of the city. In this review, I'll cover everything you need to know about facilities, amenities, reservations, prices, and my experience staying as a campervan traveler.
Location and Accessibility
The Reykjavik Campsite is conveniently located right next to Laugardalslaug, the largest geothermal pool in Reykjavik. The campsite is just off the main road of Kringlumyrarbraut, making it easy to access by car or bus. It's only a 3 km distance and quick 10 minute drive into downtown Reykjavik.
You can also walk from the campsite to the city center in about 30 minutes. This makes it feasible to stay at the campsite without a rental car if you don't mind the short walk. The campsite's proximity to downtown Reykjavik, yet just outside the hustle and bustle, is ideal.
Facilities and Amenities
The Reykjavik Campsite has excellent facilities for campervan and tent campers. There is a building housing clean restrooms with ample toilets and sinks so there's never a wait. The heated bathrooms make washing up comfortable even in cool Icelandic weather.
Free WiFi is available throughout the campgrounds. There are also free hot showers, though we did not use them on our stay.
The spacious kitchen has 4 cooking areas, each with 2 burners, a sink, food prep space, and shelves stocked with free food and ingredients left behind by other travelers. This was the campsite with the most free food of all we visited in Iceland. Be sure to refill your water bottles and camping water tanks at the drinking water station, not the kitchen sink. The kitchen water had a strong sulfur odor and taste due to the geothermal source, while the drinking water stations provided filtered water.
There is an unlimited supply of hot water for making coffee, tea, or quick meals. The large common room has ample seating to relax and socialize after a day exploring Reykjavik.
I’m somewhat of a coffee snob, so I am always looking for a way to drink a good cup of joe when I’m on the go. These Kuju pour overs have been really nice when I don’t have access to my freshly ground beans and Hario v60.
Reservations and Check-In
The Reykjavik Campsite requires reservations in advance online. How far in advance depends on how busy the season is. We were able to arrive at the campsite and then book a night on our phone. After booking, you'll receive a confirmation email with an access code unique to your reservation.
When you arrive at the campsite, use this code at the automated gate to enter the grounds and access the facilities. The code was still valid for us after the posted 11AM checkout time, granting flexibility on departure day.
We checked in mid-afternoon after flying into Keflavik Airport. There was ample parking and space at this time. However, when returning late at night the campsite was nearly full. We managed to find a spot with electrical hookup, though it required walking through muddy patches to reach amenities.
I recommend arriving earlier in the day if possible to secure a prime parking spot near the facilities. Late at night you may end up in the far corners of the campground.
Pricing
Considering its close proximity to Reykjavik, the Reykjavik Campsite is very reasonably priced. At the time of our visit in summer 2023, rates were about 2,500 ISK ($20 USD) per person per night.
There are also small additional fees for electricity hookups. Campervan travelers must pay extra for an electrical spot. However, the showers are free for all campers to use.
Compared to Reykjavik hotels and Airbnbs, the campsite is an affordable lodging option that still provides access to the capital area. The price reflects the basic facilities, but is worth it for the convenience of the location.

Overall, I highly recommend the Reykjavik Campsite for its ideal location and affordable rates. The facilities provide all the basics you need after a day exploring Iceland's capital. Despite the muddy conditions after rain, it's a comfortable and convenient home base for enjoying Reykjavik and the surrounding region. With reservations made in advance online, checking in is straightforward. Claim your spot early to be closest to the amenities.
During our stay, we accidentally left an electrical hookup cable connected to the outlet. To our surprise, the cable was untouched and waiting for us upon returning a week later (check out our 7 day itinerary here). This reflects the safety and community feel of the well-run campground.
